SURVEY

The national-level survey provides valuable information on the changes of perspective and public attitude towards multilingualism as well as the types of FLPs existing in the current UK society. The questionnaire is designed to give us information on how people, monolingual or multilingual, view and use language(s) in their daily lives.

The data collected will yield information on:

 -    What types of FLP exist in private domains in the current UK society?

 -    How mobility and on-going changes in sociocultural contexts impact on the linguistic configurations of transnational families and           language practice patterns in transnational and non-transnational families?

The survey can be accessed in online and print versions by anyone who knows English and/or the community language and who has multilingual and transnational family experiences. We will approach participants through our advisory panels and non-academic associates by distributing the survey through parent associations, in social media such as WhatsApp and WeChat, in mainstream schools, community centres, heritage language schools, at cultural events, community groceries, supermarkets, and student associations. The design of the survey requires as little writing as possible thus enabling a high response rate. In order to make the descriptive statistics manageable, we use existing online survey tools, such as survey monkey to accomplish the task.
